Peter MacLeod was invited for an exclusive tour of The Co-operative Group’s new £15 million distribution depot at Birtley, which features materials handling equipment powered by energy efficient, zero maintenance EnerSys Hawker Evolution batteries.
The Co-operative Group’s new 280,000ft2 facility at Birtley in Co.Durham serves the retailer’s 260 food stores in Scotland and the north of England. Orders are picked at a rate of 500,000 cases per week, and there are 200 outbound deliveries a day. More than 550 staff are employed at the site, including drivers, warehouse operatives and vehicle maintenance staff, as well as staff working in food retail administration and other parts of The Co-operative business. The facility is operated by Co-operative Retail Logistics.
