Interroll continues to innovate for the future
Fifty years ago, Interroll was founded by two friends in a shed near Cologne. This autumn, Peter MacLeod joined the roller manufacturer's Golden Jubilee celebrations at a global symposium in Locarno, Switzerland, to see for himself how the manufacturer of 300 million rollers continues to innovate for the future.
The two friends who founded Interroll in the village of Wermelskirchen – Dieter Specht and Hans vom Stein – are still with us today. Indeed, former chairman of the board Herr Specht was given the responsibility of organising the symposium, which involved over 500 guests being ferried around Lake Maggiore in an endless fleet of passenger vehicles of all sizes, and squirrelling away pockets of people in the numerous small hotels that are dotted up and down the steep lanes around the lake.

Conveyor Unit Ltd’s flexible solution
By keeping up-to-date with design and manufacturing technology, Conveyor Units Ltd. says it can keep pace with market demands and offer a solution to most handling requirements, as its latest UNI-FLEX range demonstrates.
The latest product to be added to the Conveyor Units (CU) stable is the UNI-FLEX range of conveyors. These flexible conveyors are described as suitable for space saving and configuration changes. This proven product is currently used in industries such as logistics, tyre handling, end of line packaging and distribution from trays of flowers to bundles of catalogues. CU says UNI-FLEX increases materials handling efficiencies in loose loading and unloading by up to 50%, offering a rapid ROI.
igus tube-style cable carriers protect cables and minimise downtime costs
GÜDEL Inc. is using reinforced plastic cable carriers from igus to minimise downtime across its range of automated systems, from multi-axis robots and press-transfer systems to factory-automation equipment and gantry robots. The cable carriers guide and protect moving cables and hoses to maximise uptime for GÜDEL’s customers.
GÜDEL uses System E4/100 enclosed Energy Tubes from igus, which feature hinged, snap-open lids for easy access to cables and hoses. The robust plastic chains are completely resistant to harsh chemicals, hot flying debris, dirt and dust. They withstand high loads, fast accelerations and speeds, and long travels. GÜDEL’s machines use up to 70m of Energy Tube and operate at speeds up to 7m/s.
Office Depot looks to SSI Schaefer
When Office Depot needed a more efficient automated shipping sortation system at its new Leicester distribution centre, it looked to SSI Schaefer to successfully complete the design, supply, manufacture and delivery of a productive solution.
In just under 12 months SSI Schaefer has completed the design, supply, manufacture, delivery and installation of a fully functioning Automated Order Fulfillment System for Office Depot’s new distribution centre in Leicester.
AS/RS offers reliable retrieval
Nigel Bailey, senior consultant at logistics consultancy Davies & Robson, investigates the advantages of Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems for use in today’s modern warehousing environment.
Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (AS/RS) are becoming increasingly important in today’s modern warehousing environment where the emphasis is not only on the fast and efficient movement of goods in and out of storage locations, but also on the provision of high density pallet storage. Like any modern warehouse management system, an AS/RS makes decisions as to pallet location and pallet retrieval, but, unlike a WMS, also controls the operation of the equipment that actions those decisions, without human intervention.
