A load off one’s mind
A round-up of the latest products deployed in and around the loading bay, a part of the warehouse where great efficiencies can be made to a logistics operation of any size.
At a time when businesses are looking closely at every aspect of their supply chain operations, there is still one area where seemingly large gains in efficiency can be made. The loading bay provides an interface between the warehouse and the distribution network, a place where tiny gains in productivity can bring massive benefits.
Hormann offers cold efficiency
The efficiency of any warehouse or distribution centre has to start at the door and this should be the case for the handling of any product. Hörmann continues to add to its portfolio of well engineered loading bay products by introducing technology that can help the warehouse or centre manager operate quickly and efficiently in all cases.
Keeping food either chilled or frozen throughout its journey from manufacturer to the chilled or freezer shelf in the store presents a number of logistical challenges, and none more so than ensuring it is kept at a constant optimum temperature.
Speedy success for Asda with Hörmann’s Spiral Doors
Hörmann’s High Speed Insulated Spiral Doors are a relatively new product, but popular with companies such as Asda, which recently had 14 of these installed at its new DC in Didcot.
Charged with helping ASDA produce a low energy solution to storage and distribution, Hörmann has installed 14 High Speed Insulated Spiral Doors at ASDA’s newly built 30,000 square metre warehouse and distribution centre in Didcot.

Handle with care: vehicle loading & unloading
Loading and unloading equipment from vehicles can often be difficult to carry out safely and efficiently. Manufacturers are continually adapting their products to help enable the safe and efficient handling of goods from vehicles, as this round-up of the latest load handling equipment by Nikki Catchpole shows.
During the logistics and supply chain process, vehicle loading can be a significant concern for logistics companies: lorries are expected to be fully loaded for most of their routes. This makes it necessary to work out truck plans and ensure the most efficient loading possible, by using versatile cranes, on-board weighing systems, and loading bay cage lifts. When planning vehicle loading, factors such as load stability & weight distribution, efficient vehicle fill, load weight, and load height all need to be considered carefully. Indeed, John Meale, managing director of loading & unloading equipment specialist Thorworld Industries Ltd says, spending time choosing the best designed and manufactured loading bay and handling equipment can pay dividends in making the in/out process quicker.
Loading bay safety with Castell’s driveaway prevention system
Leading wallpaper manufacturer Graham & Brown is protecting warehouse staff at its Padiham distribution centre, near Blackburn, with Castell’s driveaway prevention system Salvo. The 12,600 sq m site dispatches an average of 45,000 cartons, or 500,000 rolls of wallpaper, a week.
Following a driveaway incident from which a loader escaped without serious injury, the company realised that it needed to install a more advanced safety system than the verbal method on which it had been relying.
