Picking ergonomics
In this latest article by members of the Automated Material Handling Systems Association (AMHSA), Roger Peart, major accounts manager for Vanderlande Industries UK Ltd, argues that the way forward for the retail sector is to focus on ergonomic automation.
Napoleon who dubbed the British ‘a nation of shopkeepers’, and the retail sector is still arguably the powerhouse of the UK economy – worth some £270 billion, contributing 8% of our national GDP and employing over 3 million people (11% of the nation’s workforce).
Clean solution from Habasit Rossi
Habasit Rossi, one of the UK’s market leaders in conveyor belting, has launched HyClean, a new plastic modular belting solution for the food processing industry, specifically designed to meet the most demanding hygiene requirements, while delivering tangible cost savings and improvements to process and performance.
The HyClean package from Habasit Rossi features a new sprocket and 2” flat top module, both made in an advanced, hygienic design, together with an CIP (Clean in Place) system, which makes cleaning procedures in food processing areas a much easier and straightforward process.
AMH conveys savings to Menzies
AMH Services Ltd has driven savings of around 70% in the cost of maintaining and servicing the conveyor equipment across the Menzies Distribution network.
“Taking a ‘value driven’ approach to maintenance enables us to achieve an optimised use of resource, ensuring each hour of maintenance time results in a tangible benefit whilst reducing breakdowns,” says AMH managing director, Spencer Roberts. “Too often maintenance is delivered on a purely ‘time-based’ interval, regardless of the condition of the plant. This inevitably leads to wastage in maintenance time with no visible benefit.”
Buytrago equips Madrid DC with new Vitronic ID system
Efficiency conscious Buytrago, a leading Spanish express delivery and transport services provider, has equipped its Madrid distribution centre with Vitronic’s camera-based VIPAC identification system. It allows the site to sort parcels for dispatch automatically at high speed, and deliver them to customers on time.
Buytrago employs more than 1,600 workers and offers a wide range of services, including next day delivery, temperature controlled delivery for shipping perishable goods, and postal insurance. It operates over 60 hubs, which distribute mail to people in their local areas. Madrid is the largest of these.

Materials handling specialist CI Logistics has designed and installed a triple strand chain conveyor for the light vehicle drive line of Dana Traction Technologies Europe in Witton, Birmingham. Dana is a leader in the supply of quality automotive product solutions in four core areas of the vehicle – drivetrain, structural, sealing and thermal systems.

However, in these extreme financial conditions, I challenge you to extend the definition to include the service of your mechanical handling equipment.
