Avonmouth distribution hub gets green light from planners

An industrial park scheme near Avonmouth totalling 2.5m sq ft has been granted outline planning consent by Bristol City Council. Warwickshire-based developer Bericote Properties has received the green light for the scheme, which includes a 1m sq ft distribution park on a 62 acre site.

The consent includes a 550,000 sq ft frozen warehouse at the site, which reports suggest is earmarked for ASDA.

Lockhead gets CILT nod

The president of the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport in the UK (CILT), Graeme McFaull, chief executive of Wincanton plc, has announced that Sir Moir Lockhead OBE, has been nominated as president elect of the Institute. He will take over the role of president from Graeme in May 2010.

Graeme McFaull said, “I am delighted that the presidency will pass to such an excellent ambassador for the transport industry. Moir Lockhead is a very influential figure in both public transport and freight arenas. His high profile can only help further the work of the Institute and ensure its place at the heart of the transport and logistics industry.

RFG welcomes rail study announcement

The Rail Freight Group (RFG) has welcomed plans for a new government study that promises to scrutinise the associated costs of running the UK rail network. The UK's Department for Transport (DfT) said it wanted increased value for money from the network and to "examine the overall cost structure of all elements of the railway sector".

In particular, it said it would examine incentives to achieve greater efficiencies and identify any "legal, operational and cultural barriers" that currently may prevent achieving increased value for money for both passengers and freight.

CHEP uses pioneering Stobart rail service

CHEP, a global leader in pallet and container pooling services, has signed a major agreement with Stobart Rail to use its pioneering new train service, which runs between Spain and the UK. The weekly service, which is operated in conjunction with DB Schenker, travels the 1,100-mile route from Valencia to the Ford Dagenham railhead, importing fresh and ambient Spanish produce.

On the return journey, the train’s 30 containers are filled with nearly 12,000 CHEP pallets which would previously have been transported using some 30 trucks. With goods being imported into the UK on CHEP pallets, it is necessary for CHEP to export its pallets to Europe to keep its equipment pool balanced.

IMHX 2010 to host AMHSA pavilion

The Automated Material Handling Systems Association (AMHSA) and IMHX 2010 organiser Quartz have revealed that the show will feature a special pavilion for automated handling system suppliers.

Taking place at the NEC, Birmingham, from 16 – 19 November, the International Materials Handling Exhibition (IMHX) is the undisputed leader in UK logistics events, ably demonstrated by the fact that exhibitor space at the show is over 70% sold already. With the event co-owned by BITA (British Industrial Truck Association), IMHX has always had a large core of support from the materials handling equipment (MHE) sector but the show has also attracted increasing numbers of automated handling exhibitors, as well as software providers and consultancy firms.
