Drax harvests benefit from Demag crane
Lifting equipment manufacturer, Demag Cranes & Components Ltd, has installed a specialist bale handling crane system at Drax Power Limited’s new biomass processing facility at Goole, East Riding of Yorkshire. The prototype plant has been established to process wheat, barley and rape straw, which are by products from arable farming in the region. The plant processes straw, which is a recognised biomass material, into fuel pellets for co-firing with coal, as part of Drax’s carbon emissions reduction programme, at the company’s power station, located just 3 miles from the biomass processing facility.
To meet the specific materials handling requirements of the pellet production process, Demag installed at 29m span, double girder, automatic crane system, rated at 22 tonne SWL. Mounted on the crane is a specialist 12 tonne bale handling grab unit.

Pedigree Wholesale switches to Atlet warehouse trucks
Pedigree Wholesale has switched to Atlet warehouse trucks in a combination of contract hire and outright purchase at its main distribution centre near Nottingham. By aligning the make-up of the fleet to its precise materials handling requirements, the pet and aquatic products supplier has reduced the number of trucks required, increased efficiency and cut downtime as well as saving on its previous repair and maintenance bill.
“If you’re offering a service you have to invest in the equipment to deliver that service,” says Darren Willetts, group operations manager at Pedigree Wholesale Midlands. “You pay a bit more for Atlet up front but it’s what you get for the money that matters.”
Geodis Calberson invests £2m in UK operations
Global logistics provider Geodis Calberson has announced a £2m investment to expand its UK operation in four significant areas.

Neil Hodgson appointed managing director of Fortec pallet network
Neil Hodgson, formerly network manager of Fortec Pallet Distribution Network - part of the Geodis Calberson group - has been appointed managing director with immediate effect.
Breaking the news in London yesterday (28th October) at a Geodis Calberson press conference (see separate story), Mr Hodgson explained he has mixed emotions about his appointment, as it follows the recent death in service of Rod Abrahams, a much respected colleague. "On the one hand, I am delighted to be given the chance to take on this position. These are exciting times for us at Geodis Calberson, and I wish I were 20 years younger. On the other hand, it comes as a result of Rod's passing, so it is with sadness that I take the position."
