Nissan Forklift Co. is born
Nissan has confirmed its previously-announced intention to spin-off its Industrial Machinery Division and create a new company, called Nissan Forklift Co., to take over its operations. The Japanese manufacturer says the measure will come into effect on 1st October October 2010.
According to the car maker, the decision to set up a new company, under review since May, has been taken in order to give the division more autonomy and a more flexible management. The goal of the new entity is to cope with the current, difficult forklift market and, at the same time, try to grow the business.
Axxom debuts software solution at IMHX
Axxom Software AG has developed a new efficient offer calculation solution for logistics services: ORion-PI Tender Management. The software enables logistics service providers to easily and accurately calculate offers for warehouse outsourcing and warehousing services, thus increasing the financial planning reliability when responding to bid invitations. Axxom will present the solution for the first time at IMHX (hall 20, booth F95) taking place from the 16th to 19th of November at Birmingham's NEC.
ORion-PI Tender Management helps logistics service providers e.g. to precisely calculate the overall costs of new outsourcing orders, identify the exact staffing requirements including the respective qualifications and calculate the required staff costs. The software also supports the integration of new customers in the logistics service provider’s warehouse. In addition, it presents the financial effects of changes concerning the order structures, order or item quantities at the customer that increase the process complexity and therefore the related costs.
Firm fined for forklift injury
Tyre manufacturer Pirelli has been fined £9,000 after a worker suffered a broken leg when he was hit by a fork lift truck at the company's Carlisle factory.
Allan Miller, a 62-year-old contractor, was walking through an area within the curing department at the Dalston Road site when he was struck from behind by a pallet being carried on a fork lift truck. He suffered a broken leg and has been unable to return to his normal duties.
HSE director to speak at forklift safety conference
The Fork Lift Truck Association (FLTA) has confirmed a strong line-up of speakers for its National Fork Lift Truck Safety Conference, which takes place on 22nd September at Warwick University.
The Association has made additional seats available to cope with anticipated demand for the event, switching to a larger venue after last year’s conference sold out in record time.
Waitrose appoints new supply chain director
David Jones, who currently holds the position of divisional registrar for John Lewis, has been appointed as supply chain director for the partnership's Waitrose stores with effect from 31 August 2010.
Jones, who joined the John Lewis Partnership in 1982 has held several branch manager roles in Waitrose before moving to buying in 1994. He became head of buying services in 2002 before moving to the corporate office as deputy partners' counsellor in 2005.
Christmas comes early to the supply chain
The Christmas peak is expected to come earlier than ever in 2010 and retailers need to ensure that their supply chains are prepared to cope with this significant development or they risk missing a key opportunity. This is one of the findings of a new white paper that has been developed by OPS Logistics Consultancy about the affect of the recent emergency budget and the forthcoming VAT rise, and which measures the potential impact on the supply chain.
“Retailers need to start planning now if they are to take advantage of both the opportunities and challenges the VAT rise will bring, and this is likely to have a major impact on the logistics sector,” according to Dan Derry, Managing Director of OPS. “With the tax changes occurring in the middle of the peak, (note: Peak is Oct to early Dec; VAT is not until Jan) this will not only encourage the consumer to buy earlier this year to beat the rise but also create spikes in the demand to put increased pressure on the supply chain.”
