Psion sets out vision with four major announcements
Psion, the pioneer in mobile handheld computers for industrial and commercial markets, has made four major announcements alongside its 2009 annual results, including and most significantly, a fundamental change to its business model.
The announcements are:
Lofting and Fritzsche collect FLTA gongs
The 2010 FLTA Awards for Excellence took place at its annual dinner & dance, and Albury Asset Rentals' Kevin Lofting and Jungheinrich's Günter Fritzsche each received recognition of their service to the industry.
Kevin Lofting, who retired from Albury at the end of last year, founded Albury Asset Rentals, and helmed it through thick and thin to become the leading force it is today in the world of capital equipment financing. He was also the first man (in 1994) to step forward and sponsor the inaugural FLTA Awards, so it is fitting that he himself should walk off with the FLTA Lifetime Achievement Award - the highest honour the materials handling industry can bestow - at the end of his career.

Stobart secures long-term Tesco deal
Multimodal transport and logistics solutions provider Stobart Group has agreed to dispose part of its Inland Ports asset to Legal & General Assurance (Pensions Management) Limited, for £61m rising to £62.5m on the satisfaction of further conditions. A key element of this sale is a state-of-the-art 528,000 square feet sustainable distribution centre developed by Stobart Group. This was recently announced as the new Northern distribution centre for Tesco’s fresh operations. In addition, Stobart was confirmed as the transport contractor for Tesco from this distribution centre.
Stobart expects to increase the throughput of the Inland Port terminal (currently only 50% utilised) when the site is fully operational and when the existing Valencia fresh rail service is extended to Widnes. This next phase of the pioneering Stobart Rail service, will allow Tesco to transport its fresh produce from Southern Spain to Northern England by rail, delivering significant environmental benefits.

The new additions to the Europa fleet include 38 curtain-siders with boards and 12 dry freight boxes. Also added to the fleet is a new aerodynamic-shaped trailer to improve fuel efficiency and performance levels to help reduce the company’s carbon footprint.
Knapp helps John Lewis achieve record sales
It has been widely reported in the retail press that John Lewis has achieved record Christmas sales. Less widely known is that helping John Lewis to achieve some of these sales was its brand-new £45 million, state-of-the-art national distribution centre (NDC), designed and installed by Knapp, which was opened in June last year.
The 650,000 sq ft NDC – located at Magna Park, Milton Keynes, at junction 13 of the M1 – features a huge automated handling system that drives the distribution for some 87,000 products.
