UKWA: Budget “better than we feared”
Roger Williams, chief executive officer of the United Kingdom Warehousing Association (UKWA), issued the following comment following the Chancellor's budget statement:
“We welcome the reduction in the headline rates of corporation tax. It will help in attracting international companies to do business in the UK, and by 2014 we will have one of the lowest rates in the G20 (24%).
DX Group signs national deal with Big Yellow
DX Business Direct, part of the DX Group, a leading independent mail, courier and secure logistics company, has signed a new deal with self storage company Big Yellow. The agreement will see DX Business Direct place dedicated ParcelXchange depots on 18 of Big Yellow’s UK flagship forecourts.
Offering 24 hour access, 7 days a week, DX Business Direct ParcelXchanges are a series of intelligent lockers with in-built track-and-trace functions. They enable businesses, especially with field-based personnel, to dispatch parts nationwide for engineer collection, via a tracked overnight delivery service. ParcelXchanges can improve business effectiveness by reducing distribution costs, improving stock control and increasing engineer efficiency, while also improving call-out response times. Big Yellow sites provide state-of-the-art security with pin code access.
FTA calls on Chancellor to support transport links
The Freight Transport Association has welcomed the Budget statement from the Chancellor and his pledge to ‘support the transport links we need to trade our goods'. However, FTA still wants further action to support the sector that is the lifeblood of the whole economy.
Waitrose supply chain director moves up
Waitrose has announced that Mark Williamson, its supply chain director, has been promoted to the position of commercial director to replace Richard Hodgson, who has joined Morrisons in a similar role.
Mark Price, managing director of Waitrose, said, "Richard has done a great job for Waitrose, but I respect his wish to return to Yorkshire. He goes with our gratitude and all good wishes for the future."
Tesco prepares to replace Stakehill with Widnes
Tesco will close its Middleton One DC at Stakehill, on the northern outskirts of Manchester, on 10th July, five days after the opening of the firm's new superstore in nearby Rochdale. Operations currently taking place at the Middleton One site will transfer from Middleton to a new facility in Widnes.
The site itself on Stakehill is currently the main North West hub for Tesco's fresh food distribution. But following the appointment of the Stobart Group to replace Wincanton as the firm's fresh food distributor in the region, operations will move to Widnes. A number of the employees at the Stakehill site had been down to the site facility in Widnes to see if they would want to transfer there.
ByBox acquires technical courier firm
ByBox, the UK's largest in-night distribution provider, has acquired technical courier PPR Solutions for an undisclosed sum, in order to complete its "end to end" supply-chain vision.
ByBox, which typically delivers mission-critical parts to field-based engineers, purchased the London business in order to offer current clients further outsourced engineering if they require it.
