Logistics apprenticeships – delivering goods for jobs and customers
Increasing numbers of employers are offering apprenticeships in various aspects of logistics for young people. Between 2005/6 and 2008/9 apprenticeships certified by Skills for Logistics (SfL), the Sector Skills Council for the freight logistics industry, increased by 130 per cent. Responding to this interest, SfL is developing an expanded range of apprenticeship schemes covering the wide selection of disciplines and career options available within the freight logistics industry. SfL supports National Apprenticeship Week which takes place on 1 – 5 February providing a comprehensive window on apprenticeship opportunities.
Dr Mick Jackson, chief executive of Skills for Logistics, says ‘In recent years there has been a welcome increase in the number of apprentices as many employers in the freight logistics industry offer such schemes. Apprenticeships have the advantage, popular with both employers and workers, of providing effective education alongside practical on-the-job training. This gives young workers the happy balance of learning and obtaining a qualification, alongside the satisfaction of carrying out important and rewarding work and gaining that crucial experience and transferable skills which serve as the springboard for their career.
Planning ahead for equipment maintenance pays dividends
John Meale, managing director of loading/unloading equipment specialist Thorworld Industries, says it is imperative that companies pay close attention to service and maintenance of their load-handling equipment.
In the current economic downturn, where companies might delay loading bay and materials handling equipment renewal or upgrades, it is now even more vital for regular pre-planned service and maintenance of existing load handling equipment to be implemented. Failure to do so is a false economy which could have serious and expensive consequences for both machinery owners and operator.

Lifting equipment manufacturer, Demag Cranes & Components Ltd, has installed two crane systems at Rainham Steel’s Scunthorpe distribution centre, as part of the development of a new £1.3 million warehouse facility.
Rainham Steel is one of the UK’s largest independent steel stockholders and its 50 acre Scunthorpe stockyard typically holds 55,000 tonnes of steel at any one time. To meet sustained expansion, the company has developed a 75,000 sq ft warehouse facility for the processing and storage of steel beams.
Spaciotempo solution is a winner for Webb’s of Wychbold
The UK’s premier garden centre has joined forces with the country’s leading provider of temporary buildings to create a 975m² storage facility at its Worcestershire site.
From an initial order back in 2007 for a small storage unit for the burgeoning business, Webb’s of Wychbold has now specified its third consecutive building structure from Spaciotempo.
Dynamic Systems ensures full compliance with CDM regulations
Increasing numbers of companies are turning to Dynamic Systems Limited to ensure that they comply with Construction Design Management (CDM) regulations, thereby avoiding health and safety problems and possible prosecution.
Any company undertaking a new industrial project should be aware that it may be governed by CDM regulations. However, understanding the rules and ensuring they are adhered to is often confusing. CDM rules place legal responsibilities on businesses to ensure that work is carried out to specific guidelines and that contractors have the skills, experience and competence to meet these requirements. Unfortunately, many companies have neither the resources nor the expertise to oversee CDM compliance.
