Thorworld inflatable dock seals help cut energy bills
With continuing concern regarding high energy prices, more and more companies are looking to cut the cost of their fuel bills. And, according to John Meale, managing director of Thorworld Industries Ltd , one of the first places to achieve energy savings is in the loading bay - particularly if you operate an ambient or temperature controlled building such as a cold store.
In a typical warehouse, distribution centre, large store or factory, loading bays can be in frequent use throughout a typical working day. As a result, companies can incur increased energy costs and detrimental environmental conditions as their climate control systems struggle to maintain a consistent internal temperature not only in the warehouse but other areas within the company, during loading and unloading operations when external doors are constantly opened and closed.
Union completes third installation for tool company
Union Industries, one of the UK leading manufacturers of industrial rapid roll high speed doors, has assisted Jedburgh-based LS Starrett in its ongoing energy saving commitment by installing another fast acting door on the Starrett site.
The Leeds-based roller door specialist has completed the third installation of a Bulldoor at the precision tool manufacturer's factory to help reduce energy consumption and to maintain more consistent internal building temperatures on the site.
Double win for Combilift at FLTA Awards
It was a night to remember for Combilift at this year’s FLTA Awards for Excellence, held on February 18th in Birmingham. Not only did the company win the Innovation Category for the second time, for its new Rough Terrain RT forklift, but its Combi-CB model also scooped the first and only “Victor Ludorum“ prize, billed by the FLTA as the ultimate winner of winners in the awards’ 18 year history.
To mark London 2012 the FLTA introduced an Olympic theme to the event, which was co-hosted by British Olympic Champion Sally Gunnell. The Victor Ludorum was a special one-off award chosen from every winning entry in all previous awards in the Environment, Ergonomics, Safety and Innovation categories. The final votes were cast by attendees at the event, and as befits an accolade of this nature, the winner’s trophy was in a class of its own. The Archimedes (or “Archie”) statuettes awarded to winners are cast in bronze by internationally renowned sculptor Les Johnson. The gold plated Archie awarded to Combilift is unique and was created to mark the Association’s 40th year. “This very special trophy will naturally have pride of place in our awards cabinet,” said Combilift MD Martin McVicar.

Knapp hires new recruits
Knapp UK Ltd has hired a further two technical apprentices for its customer support team. The new recruits – Amy Coltman, 18, and Sam Haynes, 19 – are working as part of Knapp’s resident engineering team at the national distribution centre of British Gas in Leicester.
Commented Ebb Kretschmer, head of customer service for Knapp UK, “Following the success of our first two apprentices – who were employed at the facility of our client, shoe supplier Clarks – we decided to initiate a further two apprenticeships. As we now have contracts for resident service teams with five major clients in the UK, we need to ensure that we have sufficient skilled engineers to meet the needs of their automated handling and storage systems. We’re finding apprenticeships to be a great way of plugging the skills gap that exists in the market today.”
