Belgium strike disrupts city transport system
A general 24-hour strike in Belgium has hit all bus and rail services, and brought most of the transport system to a standstill, as the three main unions protest against austerity measures.
The protest has led to the disruption and cancellation of some international trains and flights from Brussels, leading to Thalys to cancel its services throughout the country and Eurostar to adopt a revised service as far as Lille in France, according to statements on the two rail companies' websites.
There are also no tram, subway and bus services in Brussels, and most of the terminals at the Port of Antwerp are closed, with disrupted vessel traffic and dock workers striking at 6 a.m. local time, said Annik Dirkx, a port spokesperson.
Despite the travel disruptions, however, the strike is having minimal impact on the Brussels summit of European leaders focusing on finding ways to create jobs and boost economic measures.
