Debenhams chooses Sherburn for new RDC

Department store Debenhams is setting up a new regional distribution centre at Sherburn Distribution Park, North Yorkshire, which will create up to 800 new jobs.

The retailer has signed up for a 27-year lease on a 667,000 sq ft warehouse unit in one of the region’s largest industrial property lettings this year. Debenhams, which is also taking 12,452 sq ft of office space, will start to fit out the regional distribution centre immediately and it expects to occupy the unit from June 2011.

Debenhams joins data storage company Sala International, which relocated last year from London to establish a 92,000 sq ft northern operation at the park, just off the junction 42 of the A1 near Sherburn-in-Elmet, and Eddie Stobart, Sainsburys and Kingspan.

Neil Dickinson, director of landlord Evander Properties, said: “The major investment by Debenhams is an excellent result for the region and continues a successful year for Sherburn Distribution Park. Our capacity to structure deals to suit individual occupiers’ requirements has played a major factor in the success of the scheme.”

Toby Vernon, Senior Director at CB Richard Ellis, which represented Evander Properties jointly with DTZ and Moriarty and Co added: “This significant letting signals positive news for the Yorkshire industrial property market and the regional economy. This is the third plus 400,000 sq ft letting in the region this year, all of which have been to large retailers.”

He said Yorkshire had demonstrated its capacity to accommodate major retailers and that they have interest in the remaining 660,000 sq ft of the 1.4 million sq ft park.
